When I was young I took a fantastic liking to building models and drawing. I used to love to build Revell kits, Monogram Kits and each and every other plastic model I possibly could get my hands on. We have built like 50 or more model kits and in addition we would have competitions to find out about who could build possibly the most detailed cars. We would make spark plug wires for them and paint every aspect to correspond with the original cars.
I actually got exited the very first time I assembled my first all wood airplane. Although it had been a kit the vast majority of wood parts would have to be cut out of templates and assembled one piece at a time. This required much more skill opposed to plastic models I had assembled up to that time. After assembling each of the wood model pieces, each one of the seams needed to be filled up with wood filler. In order to make the finish smooth and aerodynamic, the filler would require several coats. Everything required a coat of paint, the fuel which the little Cox engine had to have to run would make the wood swell and in all probability eat the glue, allowing the plane to break apart.
After all the painting was done, the engine and controls could be installed. This task took some time to be certain everything worked correctly and absolutely nothing would bind up. The plane model had to be able to steer and go up and down or it is going to surely crash and that would sure turn into a sad way to end so much labor. After checking all the controls and then double checking their operation then we installed the motor. This was a tiny little one cylinder gas powered monster that felt like it would take your finger off if it got in the way of the prop turning when it was running.
Next came the canopy and call signs. This seemed easy versus all the other tasks! Now the little plane looked like a real plane.
All that was left was to fill it with fuel and start it up. Test all the controls again to make doubly sure everything worked.
Was I ready to start that little motor and see if it actually flew or put it on my dresser and admire it?
I will let you guess if I flew it or not! The correct answer is on my Airplane Model Internet page see if you can find it.Military Aircraft Models
